Ledger Live: Login & Getting Started

Your Secure, Step-by-Step Guide to Digital Asset Management

I. Initial Setup & Device Connection

IMPORTANT: Never share your 24-word recovery phrase. Ledger will *never* ask for it.

1

Download & Install Ledger Live

Begin by navigating to the official Ledger website. Download the Ledger Live application for your operating system (Windows, macOS, Linux). Ensure you download it ONLY from the official source to avoid malicious software. Once downloaded, run the installer and follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation. This process is crucial for establishing a secure connection to your hardware wallet.

2

Connect Your Ledger Device

Open the Ledger Live application. Connect your Ledger Nano S or Nano X to your computer using the supplied USB cable. On your device, enter your PIN Code to unlock it. The application should automatically detect the device. If it's a new device, Ledger Live will prompt you to initialize it or restore from a recovery phrase.

3

Set Up as New Device

If you're using a brand new device, select "Set up as new device" in Ledger Live. The application will guide you through choosing a PIN, and crucially, writing down your **24-word Recovery Phrase**. This phrase is your only backup. Store it securely, offline, and never digitize it. Verify the phrase on your device when prompted.

4

Check Genuine Status

Ledger Live will perform a **Genuine Check** to confirm your device is authentic and hasn't been tampered with. This is an essential security step. Follow the prompts—it requires confirmation on your physical Ledger device. Once confirmed, you can proceed to the main interface.

II. Managing Your Assets & Security

5

Install Apps on Your Device

To manage a specific cryptocurrency (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.), you must install its corresponding app on your Ledger device. In Ledger Live, go to **Manager** (the icon often looks like a down arrow or an arrow pointing to a box). Search for the asset, and click "Install." Confirm the installation on your physical device. Note: Device capacity limits the number of apps, but your funds are safe regardless.

6

Add an Account

With the coin's app installed, go back to the main Ledger Live interface and click "Accounts." Click the "+ Add account" button. Select the cryptocurrency you want to add. Ledger Live will then ask you to open the corresponding app on your device. The software will synchronize with the network and display your account. You can add multiple accounts for the same coin.

In-Depth Security and Best Practices (Section III)

To fully secure your digital life using Ledger Live, it's paramount to understand the distinction between your **PIN** and your **Recovery Phrase**. The PIN is a local access control, protecting your device from casual theft. It is not a substitute for your 24-word Recovery Phrase. The Recovery Phrase is the *master key* to your funds, capable of restoring your wallet on any compatible device. Losing the phrase means losing access to your funds if the device breaks. Sharing the phrase means giving another person complete control. The practice of double-checking all transaction details—the recipient address and the amount—on the physical Ledger screen before confirming is non-negotiable. Malicious software can alter details displayed on your computer, but it cannot alter what is shown on the secure Ledger screen. Always verify. Furthermore, regularly updating Ledger Live and the firmware on your device, managed through the Manager tab, ensures you have the latest security patches and features. Never ignore update prompts...
